फ़िरदौसा जान बिना पिता के पली-बढ़ीं और उनके घर में एकमात्र कमाने वाली सदस्य उनकी किसान माँ थीं। उनकी माँ का सपना था कि वे एक स्वास्थ्यकर्मी बनें। कश्मीर की फ़िरदौसा को प्रतिष्ठित राष्ट्रीय फ्लोरेंस नाइटिंगेल पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया है।

Firdousa Jan grew up without a father and her mother, a farmer, was the sole earning member of the family. It was her mother’s dream that Firdousa becomes a healthcare worker. The resident of Kashmir won the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award earlier this year.

लोक रंगमंच कलाकारों का एक समुदाय, भांड, ढोल, नगाड़ा और सोरनई (एक लकड़ी की बांसुरी) लेकर रंग-बिरंगे परिधानों में गाँव-गाँव घूमते हैं। राजनीति, समाज और धर्म में समस्याग्रस्त मुद्दों को सामने लाने के लिए उनके नाटकों में दीपदान, संगीत और नृत्य का उपयोग किया जाता है।

A community of folk theatre artistes, the Bhands, travel from village to village in colourful outfits carrying the dhol, nagara and the sornai (a wooden flute). Their skits use lampoons, music and dance, to bring up problematic issues in politics, society and in religion.
