What happened on August 8, 1942?

Today marks the 77th anniversary of Quit India Movement, also known as the August Kranti or August Movement.

Evocated by Mahatma Gandhi with the war cry of 'Do or Die' on August 8, 1942, the movement spread soon across the length and breadth of India like wildfire. The movement demanded in no uncertain terms a clear break from the British rule.

Its inception, however, predates its launch which took place in All India Congress Committee's (AICC) meet in Bombay (Mumbai) the same year. Here, the Congress Working Committee, impatient with the British government's repeated, but empty, promises of Indian Independence, resolved to bring an end to the British Rule in India and so called for the Quit India Movement.

Much like Non-cooperation Movement and Salt-March, Quit India Movement proved quite effective in giving thrust to Indian struggle for independence by uniting people and weakening the shackles of British Empire.

Unfazed by the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi, the movement continued supported arduously by people despite lack of direction and year-long pernicious coercion of the British.
