This year the cherry farmers in Jammu & Kashmir, India’s topmost cherry producing province, have suffered heavy losses due to above normal rainfall and hail storms in April and May. Inspired by his father who set up the first private school in Budgam, J&K, and educated underprivileged children free of cost, Sayed Abdul Rouf, a retired joint secretary, followed suit by establishing a school in his father’s name that also provides free education to orphans and children from economically backward families.

Ali Mohammad Najar from Budgam, Kashmir, is painfully aware that he is perhaps one of the last custodians of the craft of wooden utensils, which were once integral to every Kashmiri kitchen. The craftsman now works as a labourer and repairs wooden roofs to make ends meet.

बडगाम, कश्मीर के अली मोहम्मद नज़र इस बात से वाकिफ हैं कि वो शायद लकड़ी के बर्तनों के शिल्प के अंतिम कारीगरों में से एक हैं, जो कभी हर कश्मीरी रसोई का अभिन्न अंग थे। शिल्पकार अब एक मजदूर के रूप में काम करते हैं और अपना घर चलाने के लिए लकड़ी की छतों की मरम्मत करते हैं।

अपने पिता से प्रेरित होकर, जिन्होंने जम्मू-कश्मीर के बडगाम में पहला प्राईवेट स्कूल शुरू किया, और वंचित बच्चों को मुफ्त में पढ़ाना शुरू किया, एक रिटायर्ड ज्वाइंट सेक्रेटरी सैयद अब्दुल रऊफ ने अपने पिता के नाम पर एक स्कूल की स्थापना की, जो अनाथ बच्चों और आर्थिक रूप से पिछड़े परिवारों के बच्चों को भी मुफ्त शिक्षा प्रदान करता है।

A Srinagar-based shawl manufacturing company has distributed modern spinning wheels to local women and trained them to spin pashmina and silk threads on the foot-operated charkhas. The women, many of whom work from home, earn Rs 5,000 a month.
