The Bihar government has officially declared 11 districts as drought-hit. Meanwhile, several other districts have been hit by the floods this month in October. Agricultural scientists warn that the changing monsoon rainfall patterns were a direct threat to the livelihoods of millions of farmers in the state, and there is a need to adopt alternative farming practices.

Fertile farmlands belonging to 1,000 farmers in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh are submerged in effluents from a CETP drain that has been overflowing for almost a month. Authorities admit incomplete desilting of the drain whereas CETP owners blame the October rains for it. Farmers have lost their standing paddy crop and are now worried they may not be able to sow the rabi wheat in time.
