Preparations are underway to organise the Mahakumbh at Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj. The state government is trying to ensure that the site of the grand fair remains free of open defecation. Gangakhedi village has recently won the Nanaji Deshmukh Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar 2022 for the collective work done by its residents along with their panchayati raj institutions and community based organisations. Non-profit TRIF is training villagers, including rural women, in decentralised planning and execution of schemes.

With the IMD officially declaring severe heatwave conditions in eastern Uttar Pradesh of which Ballia is a part of, at least 68 people in the district have been reported as dead and more than 400 have been hospitalised in the last 3 days. The deaths have sent alarm bells ringing but so far, the authorities have denied the heat wave to be the cause of this medical emergency. Similar reports are surfacing from Bihar which witnessed almost 50 such deaths. Details here.

As the population of the Ganges river dolphins declined alarmingly, a 60-kilometre stretch along the river in Bihar's Bhagalpur district was notified as Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in 1991. But, three decades later, the endangered species continues to face the threat of extinction and in the last six months three dolphins were found dead in the sanctuary.
