The Indian women’s hockey team is on a winning spree at Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2023 being held at Ranchi. Amid them are three players from Jharkhand who have struggled hard to reach where they are. Gaon Connection spoke to their families.

Naorem Roshibina won a silver medal in Wushu (also known as Kung Fu). This is India’s first medal in the sport at the ongoing Asian games in Hangzhou, China. She has dedicated this medal to her home state which is presently in turmoil.

So far, in the medal tally at the Asian Games 2023, a total of 86 medals have been bagged by Indian sportspersons. Out of these, many athletes belong to the rural areas who have had bare minimum means to script their success.

In Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh, 6,000 women SHGs have been formed that are providing employment opportunities to rural women and helping them set up their own businesses. Four such rural women run a canteen at the district collectorate.

Saidpur is a nondescript village, situated around 145 km from Delhi. There is a reason why it is known as "the village of soldiers". For generations, people living in this village have been serving the nation. Around 3,500 retired soldiers live here, while 1,500 soldiers from this village are currently serving in the Indian defense forces. Many have joined the paramilitary forces.While some from the older generation served during the First World War in 1914, many fought the Kargil war

Javelin thrower Annu Rani and athlete Parul Chaudhary have won gold medals at the ongoing Asian Games in China’s Hangzhou. The two sport stars belong to the rural pockets of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and began their athletic journey by practising in the sugarcane fields in their respective villages. Details here.

Neeraj Chopra brought back the gold in Javelin Throw from the World Athletics Championships in Hungary. Along with him, two other Indian javelin throwers made it to the final and helped India achieve another milestone. Both come from farming families.
