In the last three months, I have stood by the banks of three mighty rivers — the Mahanadi in Odisha, the Ganges in Bihar, and the Egyptian Nile. The year 2023 will forever be the year of rivers for me.

The monsoon clouds this year brought memories of Manoj Misra ji, the river warrior, with whom I have enjoyed informed conversations about rivers, monsoon and rainfall. He passed away on June 4, leaving behind a void in the environment conservation movement in the country.

Locals who live in the hills say rampant deforestation has led to the “forest rivers” going dry. These small rivers and streams used to be the major source of water for people living in the hills. Now locals are forced to look at other options

Large portions of the ‘perennial’ Betwa river in Madhya Pradesh are bone dry due to over exploitation of the groundwater and the river. Poor villagers living along its banks trek long distances to fetch drinking water while rich tubewell owners sell aquifer waters. Will the Ken-Betwa link project solve the region’s water crisis? A ground report.

As the population of the Ganges river dolphins declined alarmingly, a 60-kilometre stretch along the river in Bihar's Bhagalpur district was notified as Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in 1991. But, three decades later, the endangered species continues to face the threat of extinction and in the last six months three dolphins were found dead in the sanctuary.

Bihar's Kosi river is known to change its course of flow thereby submering new lands. Who does this submerged land belong – the government or the local villagers who farmed it before it got submerged by the river? A survey to address land titles in the state has run into rough weather as villagers along the Kosi, which brings devastating floods, fear the government will take over their farmlands.

Developmental pressures have seen the Yamuna riverbed in Delhi eyed by various developmental authorities -- power plants, refugee settlements, Metro station, Akshardham temple. The list goes on. Now, an elevated road is proposed on the river's floodplains
