गाँव में आज भी चिकित्सा व्यवस्था संतोषजनक नहीं है। 70% आबादी गाँवों में रहती है, लेकिन डॉक्टरों का सिर्फ़ 26% हिस्सा वहां उपलब्ध है। अस्पतालों की कमी, दवाइयों का अभाव, झोलाछाप डॉक्टरों का बोलबाला और तेजी से बढ़ती शहरी बीमारियां, ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य को बड़ी चुनौती के रूप में खड़ी कर रही हैं।

पश्चिम बंगाल में बांकुड़ा जिले के दूरदराज के कई आदिवासी गाँवों में लोगों के बीमार होने पर आशा कार्यकर्ता ही एकमात्र सहारा होती हैं। ये फ्रंटलाइन कार्यकर्ता अपनी ड्यूटी से कहीं ज़्यादा आगे बढ़कर काम करती हैं, ताकि लोगों को समय पर इलाज और दवाइयाँ मिल सके।
