In response to questions raised in the Upper House, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change informed that 90,001.15 hectares of forest land has been diverted for non-forest use in the last five years. Almost 62% of compensatory afforestation funds remained unutilised.

The Bill seeks to modify the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 which restricts the diversion of forested lands for non-forest purposes including clearing of any forest land or its portion for mining, agriculture or infrastructural projects. It is passed it Lok Sabha but is yet to be debated and passed in the Upper House and achieve President's assent before it becomes an Act or the law.

Two German Shepherd dogs and six drone cameras are being used by the forest staff of the Similipal Tiger Reserve to check wildfires and also nab criminals who try to set the jungles on fire. Last year, the tiger reserve was ravaged by uncontrollable forest fires.
