On World Wildlife Day today, read about a successful communities-based conservation initiative launched in Ladakh. Local communities that once trapped and killed wolves, are now pledging to conserve them. The traditional wolf traps or Shangdongs have been deactivated and stupas have come up near them.

Following the sighting of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard in 1981, Karera Wildlife Sanctuary was notified in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district as a conservation effort. At least 32 villages fall within the boundaries of the sanctuary and want to be excluded from it. They have warned of a massive protest from April 15. But, why do they want the denotification? A ground report.

Gharial is a long beaked crocodilian living exclusively on fish. It is found in the Himalayan fed river systems with its southernmost distribution in the river Mahanadi and its tributaries. It is not a danger to human beings but salt-water crocodiles are man eaters and many gullible persons wrongly equate gharials with salt-water crocodiles as a result of which, the lives of the gharials are now in danger.

Vultures are excellent indicators of the ecosystem's health. They feed on dead animals and thus prevent the spread of disease by the cadavers on land and water. With citizen science and increased awareness about bird watching, this threatened species can be protected.
