Once the backbone of agriculture in the Bundelkhand region, the Kenkatha breed of cattle that was once prolific in the villages on the banks of the river Ken is dwindling at an alarming rate. The indigenous breed can survive harsh weather conditions which makes it climate-resilient.

Every Sunday, hundreds of farmers in northwest Jharkhand, and their cattle in varying sizes, colours and breeds, make their way to Pathar village in Palamu. While monsoon is the time of the year the trading of cattle does brisk business, this year there are few takers for the bulls as deficient rainfall has affected farming activities.

More than 300 bighas of ready-to-harvest wheat crops are deep waters in Chandauli district as the Warila-Minor canal overflows. Farmers complain that no maintenance work has been carried out on the canal which is cracked and heavily silted in places leading to flooding of their lands and rotting their crops.

The women of the Maldhari community have a huge role to play in the rearing of livestock. They are also very artistic and their embroideries are works of art. On International Women’s Day, read about three women who have dared to dream and have made their presence felt in the semi-nomadic community.

Just a few days back people living in Naruar village lived regular lives. The intertwining night of June 13-14 changed everything when flood water gushed into their village and washed away everything that came in its way, including the cement and brick structures -- their homes -- and all their belongings. After water level receded, they came back to their "homes" to look for their belongings ranging from bikes to cattle, clothes, furniture, utensils and important documents
