From daily wage workers, local residents and commuters, the coal mandi in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh is adversely affecting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Worst affected are the labourers at the market who are employed to load and unload the coal from the never ending trail of trucks. Tuberculosis cases are rampant. In its June 2022 report, the state pollution control board has recommended relocation of the mandi, but there is no deadline in sight. A ground report.

In 2018, paddy cultivation in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh took a new turn, when black rice grains were first introduced here. Farmers who cultivated it got good returns. But, a drop in demand has left huge amounts of the blackrice unsold. Many farmers have given up the cultivation but say with government intervention, they will regrow the nutritious and ecologically beneficial rice variety.

दिहाड़ी मजदूरों, यहां रहने वाले लोग और आने-जाने वालों से लेकर उत्तर प्रदेश के चंदौली की कोयला मंडी सैकड़ों हजारों लोगों की जिंदगी में जहर घोल रही है। सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित मंडी के मजदूर हैं यहां आने वाले अनगिनत ट्रकों से कोयला उतराने और चढ़ाने का काम करते हैं। टीबी जैसी बीमारी के मामले तेजी से बढ़ रहे हैं। जून 2022 की अपनी रिपोर्ट में, राज्य प्रदूषण नियंत्रण बोर्ड ने मंडी को को यहां से हटाने की सिफारिश की है, लेकिन अब तक ये यहां से नहीं हट पायी है।
