A survey of 800 farmers from eight countries including India reveals that despite the negative impact of climate change on agriculture, there is cautious optimism too. But farmers across the board feel their voice is not heard enough.

Thatched huts built using kheep grass have kept communities cool and protected in the harsh environments of the Rajasthan desert. But the traditional thatching material is fast dwindling as concrete structures are replacing homes built with age-old wisdom.

Spring did not show up this year, but there has been fresh snowfall in April and May in some of the Himalayan states. Heatwaves are rising, lasting up to 36 days a year! But the monsoon rainfall over the Indo-Gangetic plains has reduced. India annually loses 101 billion work hours, equivalent to about 23 million jobs, due to the heat stress.

As I look back at the year gone by, my heart swells with pride, and I am also humbled at the achievements of Team Gaon Connection, big and small, that not only started some key projects in 2023 but also launched monthly magazines and published books with insights from rural India.
