भारत ने पहली बार हिम तेंदुओं की देशव्यापी वैज्ञानिक गणना पूरी की है, जिसमें कुल 718 तेंदुओं के होने की पुष्टि हुई। यह सर्वे हिमालयी इकोसिस्टम की सुरक्षा और इस दुर्लभ प्रजाति के संरक्षण की दिशा में एक ऐतिहासिक कदम माना जा रहा है।

भारत में जैव विविधता के संरक्षण के लिए कई उपाय किए गए हैं जैसे कि 103 राष्ट्रीय उद्यानों की स्थापना, 510 वन्य जीव अभ्यारणों की स्थापना, 50 टाइगर रिजर्व, 18 बायोस्फीयर रिजर्व, 3 कंजर्वेशन रिजर्व और दो सामुदायिक रिजर्व की स्थापना। भारत में 45,000 पादप प्रजातियां एवं 91,000 जंतु प्रजातियां का पर्यावास स्थल हैं।

The Bill seeks to modify the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 which restricts the diversion of forested lands for non-forest purposes including clearing of any forest land or its portion for mining, agriculture or infrastructural projects. It is passed it Lok Sabha but is yet to be debated and passed in the Upper House and achieve President's assent before it becomes an Act or the law.
