A teacher of a government primary school in Varanasi district, doesn’t think twice before visiting the houses of students who are frequently absent. His strategy has paid off as absenteeism has dropped, enrollments have gone up and with that the infrastructure of the school has improved.

In 2015, when Puran Lal Chaudhary was posted as a teacher at Barua Behad village in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, barely 12 students came to the school. No teacher wanted to stay in the village that had no electricity and was pretty backward in basic amenities. Chaudhary stayed on and transformed the school. The educator who won the state teachers’ award shares his journey.

The hardships that he faced in accessing education in his childhood were so deeply etched in his psyche that Dr Shiv Balak Misra, a noted geologist, gave up his comfortable job in Canada and returned to his village in Uttar Pradesh to set up a school that has been providing education to rural children for the past 50 years.
