Drug abuse is assuming frightening proportions in Hanumangarh district in Rajasthan and the worst hit are the rural youth, whose addiction is tearing apart families and sending crime in the villages and small towns skyrocketing. There are no significant drug-rehabilitation centres in the district to help the victims, complain activists. A ground report.

An interactive session was also conducted with young students from the village to sensitise them on crime prevention and integrity. Conducted with the use of activities and visuals, the session was immersive, reflective and elicited enthusiastic responses from students. Calling integrity a “superpower”, students pledged to be 'integrity guardians' to build a safer, peaceful and inclusive future.

"बच्चों को किसी ने नशे के फायदे और नुकसान बताये ही नहीं। छोटी उम्र में बच्चे दुकान से तम्बाकू बीड़ी लाना शुरू करते हैं और धीरे-धीरे स्वाद चखने के चक्कर में खुद खाने लगते हैं। आजकल तो आठवीं दसवीं में पढ़ने वाले बच्चे भी शौकिया तौर पर मीठी सुपारी खूब खाते हैं।"

“हमारे गाँव में तो सब तम्बाकू खाते हैं पर इसे कोई नशा नहीं मानता। लोग कहते हैं सिर्फ तम्बाकू की तो खा रहे हैं इसमें कौन सा नशा होता है। लोग शराब पीने को ही नशा मानते हैं।" गौरा गाँव के एक युवा अकरम खान ने बताया।
