It is not just the debilitating heat and long treks that make fetching water such a trial for the rural women. In Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, the water they bring for the family is also contaminated by unsafe levels of fluoride that poses a serious threat to their family's health. Can fluoride removal plants solve the growing problem of water contamination?

Having sensed that the water from the wells in their villages is devoid of toxins like arsenic and unhealthy levels of iron content, rural residents in Bihar are gradually renouncing the use of handpumps. Community action aided by some NGOs has led to the revival of wells in the Khagaria district which has resulted in a decrease in the disease burden in some of the villages. A ground report from the rural hinterland of Bihar.

Several blocks in India’s most flood-prone state experience groundwater scarcity. Paani Samitis can promote efficient use of water for irrigation, improve access to potable water, and promote adoption of indigenous water conservation practices.

Every summer, Bundelkhand reels in the heat and the region's women walk long distances in search of water. Under the central government's Har Ghar Jal scheme of Jal Jeevan Mission, villages in this drought-prone region of Uttar Pradesh have been connected with water pipelines and taps installed in rural households, but there is no water in them. As part of its Paani Yatra series, Gaon Connection explores why the taps run dry here.
