Bundeli Rai is the traditional folk dance of Bundelkhand. Rai means mustard seed. The way mustard seed swings around in the saucer, the dancers also dance likewise on the beats of traditional musical instruments of Nagadiya, Dholak, Jheeka, and Ramtoola. This traditional folk dance was fading away when the Jhansi administration stepped in to revive the culture, also support the livelihood of dancers and singers.

Chiteri art, the traditional folk art of Bundelkhand, executed on the walls of homes where a wedding is to take place is struggling to survive. The Jhansi administration is trying hard to revive and promote the 16th Century art form.

A community of folk theatre artistes, the Bhands, travel from village to village in colourful outfits carrying the dhol, nagara and the sornai (a wooden flute). Their skits use lampoons, music and dance, to bring up problematic issues in politics, society and in religion.

Art imitates life and so it is with the traditional Molela, Kaavad and Phad paintings of Rajasthan that are struggling to remain relevant in modern society. From holding pride of place in religious rituals and entertainment, the art now finds itself on cupboard doors and designer clothes.

Two years after finding it unsustainable to pursue their traditional singing, about 150 Kendara singers in Odisha are now back to wandering in the villages, humming songs while playing their cherished musical instrument which dates back to the 12th century. State government’s efforts to include these artists in the craft festivals and the ongoing festive season has brought cheers to the wanderer-singer community. Details here.

Chanan Khan is perhaps one of the last musicians who can play the Sur Mandal in the desert district of Rajasthan. Artists like him, and Kishanlal Suthar who crafts this musical instrument are fast disappearing.
