In the drought prone Raichur district in Karnataka, farmers adopt an ancient pot-irrigation technique in which porous clay pots filled with water are buried in the field. As rainfall patterns become erratic due to climate change, this traditional scheme offers hope to farmers.

Both over and under development of groundwater is limiting the adaptive capacity of Indian agriculture to climate change. Solar irrigation, expanding across India, may provide an opportunity to manage groundwater in both over and underexploited areas.

The canal irrigation network in Uttar Pradesh measures upto 74,660 kilometres and includes rajbaha (smaller canals) and drains. Still, almost 78% of irrigation needs are met by groundwater, the levels of which are fast dropping. Water conflicts around irrigation are getting violent and such clashes have left a farmer dead in the past week.

Solar irrigation pumps installed under the PM-KUSUM scheme are meant to end dependence on diesel pumps, reduce pollution, save costs to farmers, and help reach India’s goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. But to what extent is the scheme including small and marginal farmers, who make up 82% of farmers in India? Gaon Connection tries to find out.
