Sub inspector Bakhat Singh Thakur has set up a library — Vidyadan Pustakalay — at Brijpur Thana to promote education among children of nearby villages in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh. The police station also regularly holds sports events and awareness drives. Thakur, a former teacher, believes providing education is a way to tackle crime and empower children to seek better futures.

A sand mine auction in Arhatpur village of Gaya district turned violent after local villagers protested against mining in their Morhar river. These villagers have been protesting against the sand mining for the last several years and claim that sand removal from the riverbed is increasing their vulnerability during floods, destroying their farmland and endangering livelihoods. The heatwave, which is sweeping across the country right now, is causing fires that are swallowing up the standing crops. On April 18, in Majhra village of Unnao in UP, 40 hectares of wheat was lost to a raging fire. Farmers blame delayed response by the fire department, which in turn points fingers at old fire engines, insufficient manpower and bad roads.
