पारंपरिक रूप से भवन निर्माण में मिट्टी से बनी और चिमनी में पकाई गई ईंटों का प्रयोग होता है। इसमें कई तरह की ईंटों का चलन है। इस प्रकार की ईंटों के निर्माण में न केवल अधिक ऊर्जा लगती है, बल्कि उनसे भारी मात्रा में कार्बन उत्सर्जन भी होता है।
