विशेषज्ञों की माने तो जिस रफ़्तार से हम प्लास्टिक इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं, उससे आने वाले समय में दुनिया भर में 12 अरब टन प्लास्टिक कचरा जमा हो चुका होगा। इसे साफ़ करने में सैकड़ों साल लग जाएंगे।

केन्द्रीय प्रदूषण नियंत्रण बोर्ड के अनुसार भारत में हर रोज 24,940 टन प्लास्टिक कचरा उत्पन्न होता है। किसी कानून को लागू करके या जुर्माना लगाकर पर्यावरण को नहीं बचाया जा सकता है।

Plastic waste generation is on the rise in the country but there is no separate data on the quantity of such waste generation in rural India. Single-use plastics have invaded the villages where there are no waste management systems in place. For instance, in West Bengal, Assam, Punjab and Bihar, the percentage of villages that have mechanisms to manage solid waste are 0.82%, 1.08%, 1.67% and 1.97%, respectively.

The lowest compliance to the ban was recorded in Delhi (88 %), followed by Gwalior (84 %), Mumbai (71 %), and Guwahati (77 %). Bengaluru had the least usage of single-use plastics among the surveyed cities.
