The protesters called for a general strike and demonstrations against the allegedly callous attitude of the state government towards the crisis. A sand mine auction in Arhatpur village of Gaya district turned violent after local villagers protested against mining in their Morhar river. These villagers have been protesting against the sand mining for the last several years and claim that sand removal from the riverbed is increasing their vulnerability during floods, destroying their farmland and endangering livelihoods. After remaining shut for almost two years, primary schools in Jhargram district reopened on February 16. However, the situation of 69 rural schools in Belpahari circle is pitiable as many have neither piped drinking water nor functional toilets. To cook mid-day meals, water has to be fetched from far away, and teachers say that all complaints have fallen on deaf ears. A ground report.
