Developmental pressures have seen the Yamuna riverbed in Delhi eyed by various developmental authorities -- power plants, refugee settlements, Metro station, Akshardham temple. The list goes on. Now, an elevated road is proposed on the river's floodplains

The monsoon clouds this year brought memories of Manoj Misra ji, the river warrior, with whom I have enjoyed informed conversations about rivers, monsoon and rainfall. He passed away on June 4, leaving behind a void in the environment conservation movement in the country.

Yamuna has many aspects of her being. In sharp contrast to its widespread public image of being a river contaminated with pollutants, it nurtures vegetable farming on its banks. Cultivating these vegetables is a vital source of livelihood to thousands of urban farmers in Delhi. These urban farmers are barely chronicled in country's agrarian landscape. Gaon Connection offers a pictorial tribute to these farmers in a photo essay.

The contamination of water sources with antimicrobial drugs has had grave consequences in India. What is the right way to dispose of unused or expired antibiotics so that they do not find their way into our water sources?

Locals who live in the hills say rampant deforestation has led to the “forest rivers” going dry. These small rivers and streams used to be the major source of water for people living in the hills. Now locals are forced to look at other options

Apart from introducing sharp regulations and increasing the monitoring and surveillance of pharmaceutical manufacturing sites that deter the degradation of rivers, the convergence of various stakeholders should also be prioritised.
