पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, राधा और उनकी सहेलियां शाम को गायों को चराकर लौटे कृष्ण के स्वागत के लिए फूलों से जमीन पर सुंदर आकृतियां बनाया करती थीं। सांझ, जिसे हिंदी में संध्या कहते हैं, वहीं से सांझी शब्द की उत्पत्ति हुई है। लेकिन यह प्राचीन कला लुप्त होने के कगार पर है।
