टापू के लोगों की जिंदगी तमाम तरह की दुश्वारियों से भरी हुई है। वे मेनलैंड तक उन्हीं वक्तों में जा सकते हैं, जब ज्वार आया हुआ हो। शाम ढलने के बाद उन्हें टापू में कैद हो जाना पड़ता है क्योंकि शाम के बाद नावें नहीं चलती हैं। टापुओं में अच्छा अस्पताल नहीं है। रोजगार के साधन नहीं हैं। लोगों के पास पर्याप्त जमीन भी नहीं है, नतीजतन पलायन भी खूब होता है।

जलीय प्रदूषण के अन्य स्रोतों के साथ-साथ तटीय क्षेत्रों में प्लास्टिक और अन्य कचरा जमा होने से भी मैंग्रोव वनों को नुकसान हुआ है। इस बात को पृथ्वी विज्ञान मंत्रालय ने समझा है, और 75 दिनों तक चलने वाला अब तक का सबसे व्यापक समुद्र तटीय स्वच्छता अभियान शुरू किया है।
