The government ordered shutdown of tanneries in November when the Maha Kumbh Mela had started to ensure that the pilgrims could have a cleaner dip. It’s been five months and yet there is no clarity on why the tanneries are still shut or when they can re-open.While the discharge created by the tanneries is being cited as the official reason, tannery owners blame the government. Thousands have lost their jobs and the industry has suffered losses to the tune of crores of rupees

Deficient monsoon rainfall has affected millions of farmers across 65 districts in Uttar Pradesh. While they are demanding an official declaration of drought, farmers from at least 18 other districts in the state were hit by floods leading to further crop losses. The state government has announced a drought survey and also flood relief. But farmers say it is too little, too late.

In the past one week, amidst extreme heat conditions, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh reported a spate of deaths. A probe is underway to find out the cause behind these deaths. The district administration has denied any linkage to the heatwave. Gaon Connection travelled to the eastern district and visited families who claim to have lost their loved ones under mysterious circumstances.

Hilly terrain, hard to extract groundwater and failed schemes make life miserable for the 3,000 odd villagers of Lahuria Deh village in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Each of them gets just 15 litres of water a day to drink, cook and wash. Women suffer the most. A ground report as part of Gaon Connection's Paani Yatra.
