ट्रांसजेंडर शब्द के तहत चार अलग-अलग तरह के समुदाय आते हैं- पहला, हिजड़ा या किन्नर जिसे तीसरा या थर्ड जेंडर भी कहा जाता है दूसरा, ट्रांस मेन यानी वे लोग जो जैविक रूप से औरत होते हैं तीसरा, ट्रांस वीमेन यानी वे लोग जो जैविक रूप से मर्द होते हैं और चौथा और आखिरी, इंटरसेक्स। इन चारों ही समुदाय को ट्रांसजेडर शब्द में समेटकर देखा जाता है जिसे यह समुदाय नैतिक तौर पर सही नहीं मानता।
