बस्तर का बुनकर, घड़वा, वादक समुदाय (मुख्य रूप से गांडा समुदाय) और लौह कला से संबद्ध लोहार आजादी के पूर्व तक आदिम जनजातीय समुदायों में ही गिने जाते थे। लेकिन वैधानिक सर्वेक्षण की गलतियों के कारण गांडा और लोहार को आदिम जनजातीय समुदायों से अलग मान कर अनुसूचित जाति/ अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग में वर्गीकृत कर दिया गया है। इससे दोनों ही समुदाय जल जंगल जमीन से अपने नैसर्गिक अधिकारों से वंचित हो गए हैं।

In June, around 10,000 tribals from Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh gathered at NMDC complex in Kirandul village. The state-owned miner was planning to develop a large mine. The Bailadila hills where mining was to take place also housed the local deity of these tribals. The tribals staged a peaceful protest for five days. In the end, the government gave in. This was a massive victory for the tribals

Biswanath Tudu’s work has helped promote the Ol Chiki script of the Santali language. In 2010 when Biswanath Tudu got the Akademi Award, there were less than 100 Ol Chiki litterateurs in Odisha who read and wrote this unique script, but now their number has increased to over 300.
