Running out of space at the Panna Tiger Reserve?

Bangladesh is no stranger to floods. Almost every year, the country battles them during the monsoon season. However, this year unprecedented heavy rainfall has brought devastating floods, earlier than usual in the month of May. It's been almost two months and the north and northeastern regions of the country are still struggling as flood waters have washed away millions of houses and inundated hundreds of thousand hectares of farmlands. A ground report from the flood-hit Sylhet region.

Large portions of the ‘perennial’ Betwa river in Madhya Pradesh are bone dry due to over exploitation of the groundwater and the river. A ground report.

The nomadic Sikligar community that claims to have made weapons for the army of Guru Tegh Bahadur, now lives in abject poverty and its children, as young as 12 years, roam the streets of Jaipur to sharpen knives to earn a living. But customers are drying up as no one repairs knives these days.

Adivasi communities may be unlettered but they have ancient wisdom and traditional knowledge that can put development pundits to shame. But, on these rich lands — with finite wealth of coal, sponge iron, bauxite, aluminium, and several other minerals – live some of the poorest people. Laws such as the FRA, 2006, and the PESA Act, 1996 need effective implementation.
