With the IMD officially declaring severe heatwave conditions in eastern Uttar Pradesh of which Ballia is a part of, at least 68 people in the district have been reported as dead and more than 400 have been hospitalised in the last 3 days. The deaths have sent alarm bells ringing but so far, the authorities have denied the heat wave to be the cause of this medical emergency. Similar reports are surfacing from Bihar which witnessed almost 50 such deaths. Details here.

In a press statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on August 10, it was mentioned that during the inspection of the village by Neha Sharma, the District Magistrate, a complain about the lack of electricity from the villagers was registered and the officials were directed to act on the complain.

The state government claims that it has done its bit to help those affected by floods, but the ground reality is quite different.As per the official data, 81 lakh people were directly affected in the state, but more than 60 lakh couldn't find a place in any relief camps, because there were none. Similarly, 835 community kitchens were set up in 12 districts comprising 105 blocks and 1,240 panchayats. This means, there was one community kitchen for more than 7,000 people
