Nine months after violent clashes during a farmers' stir in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait organised a 75-hour long protest in the district and reasserted the demands of the cultivators. The main demands include sacking of Union Minister Ajay Mishra 'Teni', withdrawal of legal cases registered against the farmers and a legal guarantee on the minimum support price. Details here.

With an aim to increase the participation of women in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies, the Union government has introduced the 128th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2023. The Bill seeks to reserve one-third of the total seats in the legislature including the share of reserved seats under SC/ST reservations. Details here.

The Bill seeks to modify the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 which restricts the diversion of forested lands for non-forest purposes including clearing of any forest land or its portion for mining, agriculture or infrastructural projects. It is passed it Lok Sabha but is yet to be debated and passed in the Upper House and achieve President's assent before it becomes an Act or the law.
