In the past one week, amidst extreme heat conditions, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh reported a spate of deaths. A probe is underway to find out the cause behind these deaths. The district administration has denied any linkage to the heatwave. Gaon Connection travelled to the eastern district and visited families who claim to have lost their loved ones under mysterious circumstances.

With the IMD officially declaring severe heatwave conditions in eastern Uttar Pradesh of which Ballia is a part of, at least 68 people in the district have been reported as dead and more than 400 have been hospitalised in the last 3 days. The deaths have sent alarm bells ringing but so far, the authorities have denied the heat wave to be the cause of this medical emergency. Similar reports are surfacing from Bihar which witnessed almost 50 such deaths. Details here.

One of these deaths was that of a 30-year-old father of two kids who was returning to his house after meeting his wife at his in-law’s place. Gaon Connection explores the circumstances in which the young man died.
