Floods, followed by drought, have disrupted the crop cycle in Bangladesh, especially in the northern and coastal southwest regions of the country. Of the total 5.62 million hectares of land under aman paddy cultivation, only 25 per cent has been cultivated this year in the delta country.

Bangladesh is no stranger to floods. Almost every year, the country battles them during the monsoon season. However, this year unprecedented heavy rainfall has brought devastating floods, earlier than usual in the month of May. It's been almost two months and the north and northeastern regions of the country are still struggling as flood waters have washed away millions of houses and inundated hundreds of thousand hectares of farmlands. A ground report from the flood-hit Sylhet region.

Farmers in coastal areas of Bangladesh have freed the freshwater canals from encroachment to irrigate their fields and are cultivating three crops a year. Some of the farmers have adopted the floating method of vegetable cultivation in ponds for a higher produce. They no longer migrate to cities in search of work.

More than 33 million people in Pakistan have been affected by floods since June this year. Bangladesh is grappling with both floods and drought. And in India, early heatwaves, followed by early floods, and now drought-like conditions in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, have affected our main food crops – wheat and paddy. Meanwhile, wildfires are raging in Oregon (USA), and Europe is battling the worst drought in 500 years.
