The heatwave, which is sweeping across the country right now, is causing fires that are swallowing up the standing crops. On April 18, in Majhra village of Unnao in UP, 40 hectares of wheat was lost to a raging fire. Farmers blame delayed response by the fire department, which in turn points fingers at old fire engines, insufficient manpower and bad roads.

On chilly winter nights when most people huddle under their quilts, a teacher in Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh heads out to tend to his farm and protect his crop from the stray cattle. He spends the night in a makeshift machan with his blanket and a torch to keep away stray cattle. Gaon Connection spent a cold January night with Jaykaran Verma on his one acre field.

If you find your doctor regularly prescribing you multivitamins and iron, blame it on the food which is fast losing its nutritive value. The reason for this is the poor quality of soil which feeds the crops. Eating the harvest of largely undernourished soil, Indians remain undernourished despite filling up their stomachs
