A year after it imposed a 20 per cent duty on export of non-basmati rice, India has now completely prohibited its export this year as inclement weather conditions have adversely affected the sowing of rice in the key rice-producing states. India is the leading exporter of rice and the move is likely to affect global rice prices.

Direct Seeded Rice System, in which rice seeds are sown directly into the field as opposed to the traditional method of growing seedlings in a nursery, has the potential to bring down greenhouse gas emissions, use much less water, and reduce dependency on manual labour.

The government has been consistently promoting the production and consumption of millets for a variety of reasons. Besides being extremely nutritious and relatively cheap, millets, in comparison with wheat and paddy, consume very less water. Besides this, their farming doesn't call for urea or any other chemical making it environment-friendly

Deficient monsoon rainfall has affected millions of farmers across 65 districts in Uttar Pradesh. While they are demanding an official declaration of drought, farmers from at least 18 other districts in the state were hit by floods leading to further crop losses. The state government has announced a drought survey and also flood relief. But farmers say it is too little, too late.

Indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, accompanied by the reduced use of green manure, has left the agricultural soil health poorer. The issue is so serious that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, requested farmers to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
