Researchers and activists working with the tribals and other forest-dwelling communities pooh-pooh Union environment ministry's recent data on encroachment on the forest land. Unless the Forest Rights Act of 2006 is implemented in both letter and spirit, encroachment will remain a contentious issue.

Hundreds of tribal families in Bilhata, Katahari and Koni villages inside the Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh are dependent on jhiriya, a local water source, to meet their water needs. Adivasi women trek several kilometres each day through the thick jungles and climb down steep hillsides to collect water from the jhiriya. Forest officials say that these villages need to be relocated due to the Ken-Betwa Link Project.

Grateful that her parents encouraged her to study and didn't force her to marry at a young age, 20-year-old national level Kabaddi player Neelam Pardhi is aware that she has merely been lucky to do what she wanted in life. There are thousands of girls like her from her 'denotified' community who yearn to decide their own courses of lives — and the young athlete's greatest ambition is to inspire these girls to break free from the shackles of gender divide and get rid of the stigma attached to her community. A ground report from Madhya Pradesh's Panna.

Malnourishment, tuberculosis and superstition are rampant in the Saharia particularly vulnerable tribal group of Madhya Pradesh, which has the highest TB burden in the country. A community-based awareness programme on malnutrition is trying to address the problem.

On August 9, when governments around the globe observed the International Day of the World's Indigenous People, patrolling forest guards opened fire on a group of tribal residents in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha. One person died and four others were injured. What led to this incident? Where does the implementation of The Forest Rights Act, 2006, stand? A ground report.
