Having sensed that the water from the wells in their villages is devoid of toxins like arsenic and unhealthy levels of iron content, rural residents in Bihar are gradually renouncing the use of handpumps. Community action aided by some NGOs has led to the revival of wells in the Khagaria district which has resulted in a decrease in the disease burden in some of the villages. A ground report from the rural hinterland of Bihar.

A village in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh sees significant improvement in groundwater reserves after the farmers build bunds in their fields to harvest rainwater. This has led to the handpumps in the village still having water in peak summers, something that was unheard of in the past. Women no longer need to spend hours fetching water.

When we started packing for our trip, just to be on the safe side, we stuffed 'self-defence weapons' in our bags, but they were of no use.During the course of our journey, I realised how badly we have abused nature and natural resources -- water, in particular. Saving water is truly the need of the day

An 80-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy, and the story of a village rebuilding after Fani. The village lost everything this summer – the boats are gone, the nets are gone, the houses are gone

Several blocks in India’s most flood-prone state experience groundwater scarcity. Paani Samitis can promote efficient use of water for irrigation, improve access to potable water, and promote adoption of indigenous water conservation practices.
