Bihar is India’s most flood-prone state and recurring floods, apart from displacing millions every year, also contribute to human trafficking as poor families spend several months in flood relief camps from where their children are lured into ‘jobs’. Gaon Connection met several such children and here is what they told us.

Arbind Kumar Tiwary, a headmaster of a government school in tribal dominated East Singhbhum district, is ensuring education to first generation learners of a particularly vulnerable tribal group.

As the harvesting season approaches, farmers employ migrant labourers to work on their lands. However, in recent years, there has been friction between labourers and farmers in Madhya Pradesh over daily wages and things came to a head recently at Vidisha, where the labourers staged a protest.

Learning centres set up in remote villages of Malkangiri district in Odisha persuade children of migrant labourers to return to schools that had closed during the pandemic. These centres, steered by community volunteers, offer remedial classes and help enrol kids in the government schools.

As a fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lives of poor women and children in Karnataka were adversely affected. Many of the families lost access to education following a loss of livelihood.
