The Panchayati Raj system has been a total failure and retrograde. Mere expense-audit won’t be enough; the need is for a total revamping of the system by ensuring the answerability of the pradhans

Both over and under development of groundwater is limiting the adaptive capacity of Indian agriculture to climate change. Solar irrigation, expanding across India, may provide an opportunity to manage groundwater in both over and underexploited areas.

Multiple factors have contributed to a surge in the fodder prices that have jumped three times within one year across several states in north India. From devastating heatwaves affecting production of wheat (later used as fodder), scarcity of water, farmers' preference for mustard crop, and and inter-state ban on fodder movement, an unprecedented fodder crisis is forcing cattle rearers to sell their cattle at throwaway prices, or abandon them. Here's a ground report from Rajasthan, the state with the second highest cattle population in the country.

The canal irrigation network in Uttar Pradesh measures upto 74,660 kilometres and includes rajbaha (smaller canals) and drains. Still, almost 78% of irrigation needs are met by groundwater, the levels of which are fast dropping. Water conflicts around irrigation are getting violent and such clashes have left a farmer dead in the past week.

Programmes and schemes for tribal communities need to align with their values of togetherness, living in harmony with nature and non-exploitative livelihood practices. That is the only way to ensure the challenges being faced by the Adivasis are addressed without compromising the Adivasi way of living.
