किशनगंज को "बिहार के दार्जिलिंग" के रूप में जाना जाने लगा है, यहां पर लगभग 15,000 एकड़ भूमि पर चाय की खेती की जा रही है। इससे राज्य के सबसे गरीब जिले में समृद्धि आई है। हालांकि, छोटे किसान सरकार से अधिक समर्थन चाहते हैं।

असम के कछार जिले के एक दूर दराज इलाके में एक युवा चाय बागान मालिक चाय उत्पादन के मामले में अपने गाँव को एक बड़ा हब बनाने की योजना बना रहा है। जब सोनाचेरा-2 गांव में अपनी पुश्तैनी जमीन पर चाय की खेती शुरू करने के लिए उन्हें पैसे की कमी पड़ी तो इसके लिए उन्होंने बेंगलुरु में एक सुरक्षा गार्ड के रूप में काम करने से भी गुरेज नहीं किया।

असम के 800 चाय बागानों में चाय तोड़ने वाली महिलाओं का जीवन कठिन है। उनके पास एक दिन में तोड़ने के लिए 15 किलोग्राम चाय की पत्तियों का एक कोटा है, जिसके लिए उन्हें 275 रुपए का दैनिक वेतन मिलता है। महामारी ने उनके दुख को बढ़ा दिया है और अवसाद, चिंता विकार आदि के मामले बढ़ गए हैं, लेकिन इन गरीब महिलाओं के लिए मानसिक स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं न के बराबर हैं।
