Indonesia, one of the biggest exporters of palm oil to India, has banned all exports from April 28 this year. Nearly 38% of edible oil demand in India is of palm oil. The ban, coupled with the Ukraine-Russia war, may lead to a further rise in edible oil prices in the country where inflation is already soaring.

India's wheat exports are at an all-time high due to the Ukraine-Russia war. Because of rising global demand, farmers in the country are getting higher prices for their wheat, which is mostly being sold in the open market. Wheat procurement by sarkari mandis is low. Also, the heatwave has led to a drop in wheat yields this year. Is there an impending wheat crisis in the country? Gaon Connection finds out.

Like edible oils, India is also dependent on the import of chemical fertilisers which are vital for the country's food production. Natural gas is the primary component used in manufacturing these fertilisers and Russia which is waging a war in Ukraine is the biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) which means the subsidised prices at which the Indian farmers buy these fertilisers will shoot Indian government's expenses.

60% of India's edible oil demand is met through imports with a large share of it coming from warring Ukraine and Russia. As supply chains get affected due to the war, edible oil prices have gone through the roof in the country. Also, overall food inflation is on the rise which is likely to dampen the Holi festivities.

The heatwave, which is sweeping across the country right now, is causing fires that are swallowing up the standing crops. On April 18, in Majhra village of Unnao in UP, 40 hectares of wheat was lost to a raging fire. Farmers blame delayed response by the fire department, which in turn points fingers at old fire engines, insufficient manpower and bad roads.
