Unnao girl, set ablaze by men accused of raping her, dies

A 23-year-old woman, who was set on fire on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district by men accused of raping her died at a hospital in Delhi late on Friday night. The woman, who had suffered 90 per cent burns after she was set on fire, died of a cardiac arrest at the Safdarjung Hospital at 11:40 pm. She had been air-lifted to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh on Thursday evening.

She was attacked outside Sindupur village in Unnao district when she was on her way to a court in Rae Bareli to attend a court hearing. The woman was set ablaze by five men -- Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam and Shubham Trivedi.

Earlier, the victim had filed a case in March alleging that she was abducted and raped between January 19 and December 12, 2018. In her statement to the magistrate, she alleged that the accused -- Shivam and Shubham Trivedi -- had abducted and raped her in December 2018.

It was only 10 days before that the prime accused, Shubham, was released on bail while the probe in the matter was still on. He started following and threatening her immediately after securing bail. As per the report, one of these five men is the son of the village pradhan against whom the woman had lodged a rape complaint.

As per the reports, the five men thrashed her, doused her with kerosene oil and set her on fire. The survivor ran for almost one km for help, called 112 from someone's mobile phone and informed police about the incident. When police reached the spot, they found her in a severely burnt condition while the accused had fled by then.

The victim was admitted to a local hospital in Lucknow with 90 per cent burns but was later shifted to a civil hospital. By evening, she was shifted to the Safdarjung hospital.
