A women-led self help group in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, prepares colours extracted from fruits, vegetables and flowers to sell as gulal for Holi that is round the corner.

‘पानी बचाना है’ ये ख़्याल तब कहाँ किसी बुद्धिजीवी के दिमाग में आया था इसलिए होली से कई दिन पहले चबूतरों और छतों पर पानी के ड्रम भरकर रख दिये जाते। क्योंकि तब होली कोई दो दिनों की बात तो थी नहीं।

जैदी मंजिल में गुझिया की महक, ढोलक और मजीरा की थाप पर भांग की ठंडाई में डूबे रंग बिरंगे होरियारो के 'बिरहा गीतों' की महफ़िल सजती है; जो एक दूसरे को गले लगकर होली मुबारक के साथ पूरी होती है।

मध्य प्रदेश के बघेलखंड में होली नजदीक आते ही डुग...डुग... की आवाज गांवों के गली-कूचों में सुनाई देने लगती है। यह आवाज नगड़िया की है। इस शुद्ध बघेली वाद्य यंत्र की धुन के साथ फाग का गाना आज भी शुभ माना जाता है।

The Holi-special sweet, gujiyas, have brought considerable fame to a century-old shop in Baksar village in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Unlike the traditional gujiyas, which are elongated in shape, Billa Seth Ki Mashhoor Purani Dukaan shop makes them spherical.

उत्तर प्रदेश के उन्नाव के बक्सर गाँव में होली की विशेष मिठाई, गुझिया ने एक सदी पुरानी दुकान को काफी प्रसिद्धि दिलाई है। पारंपरिक गुझिया के विपरीत, जो आकार में लम्बी होती हैं, बिल्ला सेठ की मशहूर पुरानी दुकान में इसे गोल आकार में बनाया जाता है।

Having returned to his village in the aftermath of the lockdown which was imposed to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in India, Mukesh Kumar decided to set up a small workshop to produce colours used in the Holi festival. Two years down the line, he owns his small business which also provides employment to almost a dozen of workers.

Jaipur’s royals played Holi with gulaal gota, wafer thin lac balls filled with dry colours, which have been handcrafted by Muslim artisans since the 1700s.

Celebrated every year in the sacred city of Varanasi, this festival marks Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasur and is celebrated after 15 days of Diwali. It is also known as Tripurotsav and is observed on the day of Kartik Purnima.
