Many decades back, wells were not only chief source of drinking water and irrigation for people, they were also part of the villagers' culture and tradition. However, depleting underground water level seems to be changing all that and the climate change seems to be the biggest culprit

About 500 villagers in Uttarakhand’s Lohari village complain that the administration’s two-day notice to shift their belongings to a safer place before the Vyasi dam waters submerged their village, was woefully inadequate. Displaced villagers are demanding a better compensation package.

As part of its 'Paani Yatra' series, Gaon Connection recently published a ground report highlighting the plight of Lahuria Deh village that is completely dependent on water tankers for the past 20 years. Each villager was allowed only 15 litres of water a day for all their water needs. This limit has now been quashed and additional water tankers have been pressed into service.
