Gaon Connection’s ground report on the families of gangrape and murder victims from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun has been awarded as the best English Web Investigative story this year.

Two ground reports from Uttar Pradesh which documented the crimes against Dalit girls have been honoured at the Laadli Awards 2023. They have been awarded in the categories of the English Investigative Story and Web Investigative Story respectively.

Yesterday, two minor Dalit sisters were raped and killed. Their bodies were found hanging from a khair tree in a sugarcane field in their village in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. A heinous crime that is distressingly frequent in rural India. Meanwhile, the conviction rate under POSCO Act is only about 40 per cent. And, a significant chunk of the Nirbhaya funds remain unutilised by the state governments.

What happens after the last reporter goes away? In a series titled 'Twice Cursed', Gaon Connection revisits the families of the victims of rape, now forgotten. Despite the 'stringent' POCSO Act, the family of two minor girls, who were allegedly gangraped and murdered in 2014 in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, are still awaiting justice.
