The George Institute for Global Health India, an independent medical research institute has announced that it has been offered a grant by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which will be used to integrate an innovative AI-based solution into the SMARThealth Pregnancy system in rural India.

Nearly half of all pregnancies globally are unintended. In India, close to eight women die from causes related to unsafe abortion each day. Young women aged 15–19 years at the highest risk of dying from an abortion related complication.

Her miscarriage turned Pyari Devi into an unofficial healthcare worker in Mamna village of Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. So that other women do not suffer the same fate, she acts as an advisor, facilitator and a friend of local women and a key link between them and the Mahoba district hospital.

Bilahta and Katahari, two adivasi villages, are located on the border of Panna Tiger Reserve's core and buffer zones. They have no source of water other than a jhiriya that is located deep in the forest, and the tribal women walk four kilometres everyday in order to get water for their families. These villages have no metalled road nor electricity.

Kalalandi was once known as the land of starvation deaths. For the past couple of years, UNICEF, along with a local NGO KARRTABYA, has been promoting nutrition rich atkel, made with finger millet and molasses, among tribal inhabitants of the district in Odisha. Results are promising.

One in three newborns in Rajasthan are underweight. The state government attributes it to poor health awareness amongst the mothers. Poshan Champions visit homes of expectant women to counsel them, enrol them for the government’s maternity cash benefit scheme, and also raise awareness on nutrition and other health issues.
