More than 300 bighas of ready-to-harvest wheat crops are deep waters in Chandauli district as the Warila-Minor canal overflows. Farmers complain that no maintenance work has been carried out on the canal which is cracked and heavily silted in places leading to flooding of their lands and rotting their crops.

The heatwave, which is sweeping across the country right now, is causing fires that are swallowing up the standing crops. On April 18, in Majhra village of Unnao in UP, 40 hectares of wheat was lost to a raging fire. Farmers blame delayed response by the fire department, which in turn points fingers at old fire engines, insufficient manpower and bad roads.

For farmers who have sown wheat across India’s northern plains, this year’s unusually high temperatures in February are a haunting reminder of last year’s damage to their crops. Similar heat waves last year had compromised India’s wheat production by 2.75 million tonnes or 2.5 per cent of the total output during 2020-21.

India is the biggest exporter of rice in the world commanding a share of almost 40 per cent. However, deficient rainfall in the paddy growing states in the Indo-Gangetic Plains has raised an alarm with fears of the Union government restricting rice exports. Four months ago, the Indian government had prohibited wheat exports.
