Every summer, Bundelkhand reels in the heat and the region's women walk long distances in search of water. Under the central government's Har Ghar Jal scheme of Jal Jeevan Mission, villages in this drought-prone region of Uttar Pradesh have been connected with water pipelines and taps installed in rural households, but there is no water in them. As part of its Paani Yatra series, Gaon Connection explores why the taps run dry here.

जल जीवन मिशन ने पिछले 23 महीने में 4.5 करोड़ घरों में नल के पानी की आपूर्ति की है। जल जीवन मिशन के अनुसार इस समय देश के 71 जिलों, 824 प्रखंडों, 50,309 ग्राम पंचायतों और 1,00,275 गांवों में ‘हर घर जल’का लक्ष्य हासिल कर लिया गया है।

वित्तीय वर्ष 2022-23 में केंद्र सरकार की हर घर जल योजना के तहत 3.8 करोड़ घरों तक नल का कनेक्शन पहुंचाना है।

The nationwide Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019 with an aim to assist the state governments to provide tap water connections to all rural houses by December, 2024. As of July 31, 34.67 % of rural houses are yet to be covered under the scheme. Details here.

बिहार के कई गाँवों में हैंडपंपों के पानी में जहरीले रसायनों की वजह से एक बार फिर लोग कुओं की तरफ लौट रहे हैं, उन्होंने कुओं को पुनर्जीवित करके फिर से इस्तेमाल करना शुरू कर दिया है। इन गाँवों में कुओं के इस्तेमाल से बीमारियों में भी कमी आयी है।
